Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Written from "Rocky Mount," South Carolina. Declares that several letters he wrote to Knox did not arrive safely, so he is sending another and hopes Knox will receive it. Has enclosed a copy of his proposition (a plan regarding inland navigation and communications in South Carolina, GLC02437.04228) and is sure the government will look favorably on it. Hopes that Knox can promote the project to his friends. Also offers to provide Knox with any news or information about the Southern states should he have questions.
