Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Lists charges for books to the account by date, 30 September 1789 - 2 December 1789. Books include "Clarke's Vigetius," probably John Clarke's translation of Publius Flavius Vegetius Renatus's book, Epitoma rei militaris. Also includes James Hampton's translation of Polybius's History; Charles Forster Smith's translation of Thucydides; one Marine Dictionary; "Lloyd on War" (likely Henry Lloyd's book, The history of the late war in Germany...); and "Fergusons Society," likely Adam Ferguson's Essay on the History of Civil Society.
