Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Asks Knox to deliver a forwarded letter to George Washington in respects to him renewing his present position, Consul to China. Also asks about extending his duties further eastward. Writes that he is feeling much better "though still a little tender," from his late illness (see GLC02437.04453 for more details on Shaw's illness).
