Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Forwards a letter (not included) to Shaw regarding information from India. Wishes the information was more agreeable but hopes it is still useful. Asks Shaw to inform his family in Boston, Massachusetts that he has safely arrived and "enjoying the height of domestic felicity with my Wife & Child both of whom I found in good health."
