Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Writes to repeat a past request. States that "there will shortly be an augmentation of the Troops in the United States sirvice [sic], of my inclination for a military life continuing, I must beg you to interest yourself in my favour - " Hopes Knox will recommend him for the position of captain.
