Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Replies to Rickard's letter from 20 January (GLC02437.04475). Informs Rickard that he would gladly help, but "the office you applied for was filled before I received your letter." Instructs Rickard to address the President of the United States if he seeks an appointment in the future.
