Replies to Knox's letter from February. Relates that he forwarded letters from "some of our best Characters," (presumably including a letter from Knox), to President George Washington. Notes that if he obtains an appointment, "no circumstance can give me greater or more sensible pleasure than the medium through which it will be obtained."
Lyman was a captain in the Continental Army during the Revolutionary War. After the war, he served as surveyor for the port of Newport, president of the state chapter of the Society of the Cincinnati, and later became a partner in the Lyman Cotton Manufacturing Company.
