Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Asks Knox for help in obtaining a position in shipbuilding. Refers to Knox's friendship with [Samuel] Shaw, who frequently travels by ship in his capacity as a trader. Asks that Knox recommend him to anyone who may need a shipbuilder in "York."

Unless Warner is referring to New York, "York" may refer a city by that name in southeastern Maine, on the waterfront.
