Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Apologizes for distracting Knox from more important matters, but hopes that his eagerness to be part of the government will excuse his the presumptuousness. Asks Knox to inform him "in which of the States the troops will be raised, and whether (should not Pennsylvania be called up on to furnish a quota) officers will be chosen from any State but that, in which the men are recruited - "
