Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

In the year 1789, the flames of War between the creeks and the citizens of Georgia [raged] almost to the city of Savannah itself and Guards were mounted in that City to prevent a [surprize] of Indians -
Arrangements were made for a treaty [inserted: with the Creeks] under the provisions made by [strikeout] [inserted: the old [government] and] [Commissioners] were approved by the three southern states for that purpose..."
