Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Discusses the government's relations with the Indians. Believes a greater force is needed in order to deal with the Indian battles in the "western Country." Writes, "the business with the Indians has a very disagreeable appearance, and unless the government apply a sufficient force in the first instance and make them feel their power, a long and bloody war will be the issue - and the whole western country will be depopulated..." Mentions that "Major Joseph Williams" is looking for appointment as "the Inspector of the Militia of this State."
