Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Informs Knox of the actions of "Mr. Waterman Thomas" in "our House of Representatives," which are unfavorable to Knox. Thomas "has made several motions in the House with intentions to procure other terms for the letters on your patent than were expressly stipulated in the settlement you made with our Government." Writes he has been Thomas's opposition on this matter in the House and intends to defeat "Mr. Thomas's designs."
