Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Massachusetts Governor John Hancock informs Knox that he has sent Knox via Caleb Hopkins on the Brig Maria, a box of "the very best Winter Isle Shoales Table Fish, which I have preserved in the best manner, & which I will venture to assert if dress'd agreeably to the mode I practice, & which we conversed upon when together, will prove as good Eating Fish as was ever on any Table whatever."
