Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Legal agreement for Knox to rent the farm of Henry Gurney for three years. A man named Oliver Pollock was the previous tenant. The farm was situated north of Chestnut Street between Fourth and Fifth Streets. The rent was 300 pounds of Pennsylvania currency per year. Knox is also responsible for the taxes. Document witnessed and signed by Thomas Biddle and Clement Biddle.

Clement Biddle (1740-1814) was an American Revolutionary soldier. He helped organize the "Quaker Blues", a company of volunteers. He was a deputy quartermaster general of the Pennsylvania and New Jersey militia. He was the Commissary General at Valley Forge under George Washington. After the Revolutionary War he was a U.S. marshal in Pennsylvania.
