Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Tells Knox that his son Henry fell down several stairs in church "by a little inattention." Says the boy was alarmed at first because he had a bruised and swollen cheek, but he is now back in school and playing as usual.

Samuel Stanhope Smith (1751-1819) was a Presbyterian minister and the seventh president of the College of New Jersey (now Princeton University) from 1795 to 1812.
