Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Written by Captain Randall to Secretary of War Knox. Encloses two letters (not included) for the women mentioned in Knox's last letter. Annexes a statement of William Duer's notes. Says Knox has a debit of $38 dollars for a piece of blue satin that was bought for Lucy Knox. Says Captain [Job] Prince delivered a fan to him sent by Samuel Shaw to Lucy Knox, and he will ask Captain Gibbs to transmit the fan to Knox.
