At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Thanks Smith for his letter of 14 June (GLC02437.04994). Says Smith's letter was the first he heard of his son's accident. Is happy he is under Smith's good care. Says "I shall not mention the affair to his mother until he shall write to her [which] I pray you to direct him to do by the post of tomorrow."
