Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Marked "Private." Says that George Washington has showed him Willett's letter of 31 July. Knows that Willett was interested in a government position, but understands that he turned down an offer for the sheriff's office for the city and county of New York. States the president will be pleased to help him in the future. Docketed by Knox.
