Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Having been in New York lately, Knox hoped to have seen her there, but heard she had been in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania, returned, and departed for Block Island. Encloses a letter from Lafayette that was sent to President Washington (not included). Wishes her happiness.

Dear Madam
Having been lately at New York I was in hopes [inserted: you were] to have found you there but you had been In Bethlehem, returned & departed for Block Island. I forwarded to Mr. Habersham a letter [inserted: and illegible] which he [confirmed] me he gave you [before] you left Georgia
I have now the pleasure to enclose you A letter from the Marquis de la Fayette which came to the President of the United States, [struck: and] and I [inserted: further] wish you all possible happiness
