Has the honor to forward Knox a copy of Aldus's edition of Machiavelli's "Art of War" in the original Italian. Refers to it as "a literary Curiosity." Says it would be better placed in Knox's hands than his own. Tells him "I cannot suppose it contains any thing very instructive to a Man, acquainted with modern Tactics and Military Discipline, yet I flattered myself, that the curious Inquirer would have no disinclination to peruse in the original, the short Treatise of that celebrated Politician."

Dr. Samuel Latham Mitchill was a noted American chemist and geologist. He served as a U.S. congressman from 1801-1804 and as a senator from 1804-1809.
