At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Reports that the stagecoaches were so full for the past two days that they would not carry Henry Jackson Knox's trunks. Confirms that he sent the trunks the previous Saturday. Writes, "I found that he had done wrong by cutting out the lock of one of them." Adds that he did not know about it until they were being sent away. Marked "Free."
