At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

References Knox's letter of 18 October. Thanks Knox for delivering his letter to Captain Anthony. Will not be able to be present at Holker's case as engagements will detain him until 6 November, "when it will be too late to attend the trial." Writes, "I shall endeaver to effect the discount for the two thousand dollars mentioned in your letter when you draw, agreeably to your request." "Free" stamped on address leaf with no signature.

I received your favor of the 18th instant and am much obliged by your attention in delivering my letter to Capt Anthony - I am afraid it will not be in my Power to be present in Holkers case as my Bank engagements I have with detain me to make arrangements for them till the 6th of Novemr when it will be too late to attend the trial - I shall endeaver to effect the discount for the two thousand dollars mentioned in your letter when you draw, agreeably to your request.
