Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Received his last letter as well as a pipe made of bone he ordered from Pintard, which he likes very much. Discusses their families and mentions the death of his second son, Marcus, a few months ago. Relates that Mrs. Knox has been "inconsolable." Touches on other items he would like Pintard to acquire for him.
