Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

After having sent a petition to Congress, General [Jedediah] Huntington referred her to Knox. Writes to Knox to explain that she is a widow and orphan, and has lost her brother, and her home (the latter she attributes to General [Benedict] Arnold). Appeals to his benevolence and asks for redress. "Free" stamped on address leaf with no signature.
