Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Requesting acceptance of his resignation from public office. Briefly explains his motivations for resigning.

Though he spells his last name "Burnham," his rank and date of resignation coincide with the biography of a John Burnam (1749-1843) of Massachusetts, who resigned in late December, 1791.
