Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Marked copy; titled "Copy of a letter from Lt. Col. Commandt. Wilkinson to Major Zeigler." Written from Fort Washington, present-day Cincinnati, Ohio. Writes, "I yesterday received Advice from the Secretary of War, which Obliges me to retract the permission granted to you to pay a short visit to Philadelphia. The Season requires your Person, and therefore I do not feel myself Authorized to permit your Absence, but must require that you hold yourself in readiness for Command on the 12th Inst."
