At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Marked "copy." Contains three letters. The first, by Royal Flint, written on 3 April, relates that he has been told by Henry Jackson that the Committee has agreed to sell them certain state-owned lands in Maine, and he authorizes Jackson to negotiate the contract for the purchase of land. Touches briefly on the terms of the purchase. The second letter, by Royal Flint, to Henry Jackson, written on 4 April, discusses the terms of the land purchase and explains how he will get his share of the purchase money to Jackson. The third, written from Boston on 6 April, by Henry Jackson to the Committee, informs them that he is ready to proceed with the contract according to the terms they agreed to.
