Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Writes to enclose several national bank notes. Lists each of the notes along with their values. Also enumerates the amount of money Knox owes on old accounts. Discusses the monies owed by a Mr. McConnell, and encloses an open letter to him (not present) on the subject. Comments on the ability of himself and Mr. [Samuel] Shaw to sell their merchandise, such as tea, and pay what they owe. Also mentions Shaw's upcoming marriage proposal and wishes him luck.
