Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Urges Duer to make a decision with respect to the purchase of lands in Maine. Suggests he speak to General [Henry] Jackson about it, who will report faithfully back to Knox. Would like to travel to New York but is unable to do so, due to the pressures of his job. Encourages him to keep up his spirits.
