Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Marked "private." Received several of his letters. Writes that he did respond to a particular letter written earlier from Knox. Is very sincere in his apology for refusing his military appointment. Adds that he is furthermore not tempted to change his mind by the offer of a second-in-command position.
