Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Discusses their recent correspondence, and mentions that he has recently declined a military appointment. Recounts conversations he and Knox have had about the possibility of his appointment, as well as about the appointment of General [John] Brooks and Brooks's decision not to accept. Also discusses family reasons for declining, particularly the illness of his father-in-law.
