Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Expresses dissatisfaction with his situation and states that he has not heard from General Jackson or Cobb on what his next action should be. Informs that if he does not hear anything tomorrow, he will return to Boston on the Tuesday stagecoach, "and wait for your further instructions for my proceeding Eastward."
