Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Writes concerning an agreement to purchase one million acres of land in Maine from William Duer. Mentions that Duer "hath told me that there was some private agreement between you and him by which he was at leisure to dispose of the sd Lands alone" and is now asking Knox whether he should enter into this agreement with Duer or not.
