Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Asks Knox for his assistance in obtaining an appointment for her husband, Mr. Samuel Sterett, in the office of Collector for the port of Baltimore, Maryland. Explains and apologizes that her husband cannot ask personally. States that should he receive this appointment, he will resign as a member of Congress. "Free" stamped on address leaf with no signature.
