Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Page 1-2 contains a letter from Philips, Cramond & Co. to Shaw and Randall and is dated 18 January. Page 3 contains Shaw and Randall's answer and is dated 21 January. Philips, Crammond & Co. are concerned about insurance coverage. In response, Shaw and Randall are forwarding the bills of lading and invoices for the ship "Washington." Shaw and Randall report that "Gen. Knox and Mr. Anthony are informed fully of the state of our concerns with G Bell & Co - and are ready for the issue."
