Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

List of fruit trees to be delivered to the site of his future house (Montpelier). Includes 200 apple trees, 100 pear trees, 50 peach trees, 50 cherry trees, as well as 200 currant and gooseberry bushes. Mentions cuttings of grape vines, 30 locust trees, a weeping willow tree, and various nut trees will be sent. Place written was made Boston because other letters (GLC02437.05952) show that Knox was there on this date.
