Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

An indentured service contract between Friederich Gottman and Henry Knox. Gottman agrees to be Knox's servant for a term of five years and six months for his passage from Amsterdam. Upon completion of Gottman's term, Knox has agreed to give Gottman two new suits or 30 Spanish silver dollars. Contract signed by S. Farmer, Register.
