Expresses regret over Lucy's absent. Informs her he has ordered her bread, rhubarb, and a hind quarter of veal. Comments he will send for her if he does not go out after dinner. Mentions he needs to head east but is unsure if he will be able to go. Also mentions trying to avoid further embarrassments.

My dearest Love
I received your not of the last Evg. I regretted [strikeout] doubly your absence, I as an evil in itself - and [Augustus indisposition] as to the cause - I have ordered bread, and Rhubarb - and he had better but a hind quarter of veal lest you should [starve] -
If I do not come out after dinner I shall send for you and I hope you will be able to come. Remember I have to make great exertions in order to go east, and after all it is somewhat critical whether I shall be able to go. For Gods sake therefore let no other ingredients of embarrassment be added to those already existing, or the scale already balanced will be inclined as cause our happiness.
