Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Certifies the new road between Belfast, Maine and [Davistown], Maine. States the road, which was cleared by Joseph Copeland and others, is according to the agreement except for a small number of places. Notes Copeland has promised to amend the errors as soon as the weather permits. No addressee is listed, but based on the content of the letter and the handwriting of the docket addressee is Henry Knox.
