At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

The subscribers being autherised [sic] by Mrss Henery [sic] Knox Eqr Samuel Winslow & Issaac Winslow Do hereby give permission to Samuel Nickels to do occupy and Impove [sic] a Lot of Land [inserted: Containing about 100 acres] in prospect Lying at the head of Long Cove so Called Beginning at a spruce tree being the SW Corner thence N 66° E. 160 Rods to a hemlock at the shore thence Northerly by the Shore and Brook to A White pine tree thence S 66 W 160 Rods to A Ceder three thence S 25° E 100 Rods to the first mentioned Bounds for which he is to pay the propriertys the sum of Eight Shillings pr acre with Intrirsts [Interest] till paid.
