Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Discusses land purchase negotiations with Mr. [possibly Alexander] Baring. Also considers the purchase of Indian lands, though the location of those lands is unspecified. Writes that General [Henry] Jackson has been too busy lately to help with their business arrangements, which Bingham regrets. Briefly discusses the last purchase made by [Samuel] Shaw before his death.
