Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Discusses a recent negotiation he has been pursuing on behalf of Knox. Will forward a more complete statement about the negotiation soon. Will see Mr. [William] Bingham this morning and speak to him on the subject, but advises Knox to consult him as well, as "time is short, and requires immediate attention." Explains also that he has begun his own construction project, and hopes his lumber will arrive soon.
