Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Writes to Knox saying that he would lend him the money Knox needs if he had it, but the money he has, he needs for his own business ventures. Discusses selling some of his land in Pennsylvania and the possibility of taking out a loan from the national bank, along with other financial business matters. Free frank stamped and signed by William Bingham.
