Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Elliot says that he is compelled to "abandon all Idea of accepting my late appointment." Elliot cannot find anyone to take over his business, so it would be "highly imprudent." Elliot says that "nothing could warrant it but the actual Invasion of the Country, - or the certainty of a speedy and active War."
