Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Mortgage agreement with General Knox "and the whole of Township No. 2 in the First Range North of the Waldo Patent and of 7600 acres adjoining to the aforesaid Township, such part of it lying in Hamden..." On the docket, Knox notes "Mr. Dane's responsible to me that he shall obtain a paper being obligation from Thorndike and Pickman-that upon my paying them a sum not less than 7500 Dollars they shall release a proportional part of the mortgaged Lands."
