At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Wilson has received Knox's letter of December 12, 1799 and is sorry that Knox is not happy with the saws he received. Wilson is working hard to correct that and get Knox "a single saw agreable to your Request." Wilson says the "intention of this Letter is to have you send me some Mill saws."
