Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

A certificate certifying that Bradford tendered to Henry Knox a deed of land "lying in the county of Hankock and State of Massachusetts...by a certain agreement made with James Swan." The price was $2 an acre. At the bottom of the document it reads, "the subscriber cannot pronounce as to the validity of the deed nor the right of Mr. Swan to give such a deed.-He cannot accept it - nor pay the fifty thousand dollars."
