Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Copy of an agreement between Henry Knox, Benjamin Lincoln, Henry Jackson, and Thomas Lindall Winthrop. Knox, Lincoln, and Jackson agree to pay Winthrop debts due from land sales. Payment is preferred "in specie to the said Land." A postscript dated August 4, 1800 on the document mentions another illegible agreement made with someone else.
