Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Appears to discuss a proclamation that was issued. Mentions he informed Captain Knowles to raise a company to apprehend those who are in support of an undisclosed issue (possibly concerning settlers in Maine). Also mentions they were unable to complete the survey due to bad weather. Goes on to discuss the troubles with various settlers in different areas.
