Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Describes his sea voyage and food rations to his uncle Henry Knox. Says they eat beef and beans one day and pork and beans the other day. Mentions one of the vessels has the fever but believes they will not get it. Sends his regards to his aunt (Lucy Knox) and his cousins. Noted written from St. Kitts which is a nickname for St. Christopher.
